Asia is a significant partner for the EU, both from an economic and a political and cultural point of view. The entire Asia Pacific region encompasses 56% of the world’s population and accounts for 25% of the world GDP. Asia is the EU’s third-largest trading partner and a significant amount of foreign direct investment (FDI) from Europe goes to Asia. However, Asia is also one of the main hotspots for regional conflicts and tensions (Kashmir, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Korea and Taiwan). Two-thirds of the world’s poorest live in Asia. Asia comprises both the two most populous states in the world; China and India, and two of the world’s smallest states; Bhutan and Brunei.
The relations between the EU and the Asian states are as diverse as the region itself. Alongside the close bilateral relationship with China, Japan, India and South Korea, different multilateral forms of dalogue have been created over time. Since 1978, ministerial meetings with the regional organization ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) which includes the ten Southeast Asian states (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam) have taken place on a regular basis. Since 1995 the so-called Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) has provided a platform for EU-member states and 16 Asian states to meet annually and discuss a wide range of issues. The forum has developed a political dialogue and helped facilitate economic contacts.
