More than 375 million Europeans will be able to vote in the European elections this year. A total of 736 seats will be allocated for chosen representatives to defend the citizens’ interests in the EU political arena. The decisions of the Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have a direct influence on everyday life and work in the EU. The European Parliament now has considerable influence on the EU budget and legislation, and it controls the European Commission. Elections take place between June 4th and June 7th, depending on the Member States. Lists of national parties and some paneuropean political parties will compete for votes to realise their ideas for Europe during the next five years. You may vote in either your home country or country of residence, provided that you sign up for the electoral register. The Euros will cover the election campaign from a European perspective and also have a look behind the scences of the European Parliament, which works in different ways from most national parliaments, but is just as important.
