Lithuania

Capital: Vilnius
Population: 3.4 mill.
GDP per capita: 7 000 Euros (2006)
Schengen zone: yes
Eurozone: no
EU-accession: 2004
Cities with European institutions or agencies: European Institute for Gender Equality (Vilnius)

EU-relations: Lithuania has been a member of the EU since 1 May 2004. A referendum in 2003 showed that 91% of the voters accepted to join the EU, and the voter turnout was about 63%. In that way the expectations of the opinion poll researchers were clearly beaten. At present the country is experiencing enormous economic growth and has barely missed the opportunity to fulfil the criteria concerning the introduction of the Euro on 1 January 2007. At present the new goal is 2010. Already in June 2004 the country joined the so-called European Exchange Rate Mechanism II. Accordingly the exchange rate to the Euro is only allowed to float within a range of ± 15% at the most. 83.5% Lithuanians, 6.75% Poles, 6.3 Russians, 1.2% Belarussians and 0.65% Ukrainians are living in the most southern of the three Baltic states.
