EU-relations: In a referendum held in June 2003, 77.3% of the Czechs accepted the EU membership. At present the Czech national debt makes the largest obstacle on its way to introducing the Euro, since it exceeds the critical limit of 3% of the gross domestic product. At present the country does not aim at an introduction of the Euro before 2012. Prague is coming to terms with a larger budget deficit to build up the infrastructure and to finance the coming reforms. As a matter of fact, the majority of the media often views the Czechs as being generally sceptical towards Europe. A reason for this might be that prominent political representatives such as President Vaclav Klaus and the strongest government party, the right-wing Civic Democratic Party, have often expressed themselves critically with regard to Europe. According to the spring survey of 2007 by the Eurobarometer, the Czech Republic is barely above the EU average with regard to the estimate of the country’s advantages as members of the EU.

Prague and Warsaw reluctant

The Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence of the University of Roma Tor Vergata, in partnership with Eurosduvillage group, is organizing the eighth edition of the Jean Monnet Summer Seminar a high level seminar on the functioning of the European Union addressed to graduate and Phd students as well as young civil servants. The seminar include two teaching modules lasting one week. The first module (4-8 July) will analyze the decision making process of the European Union while the second one (11-15 July) the foreign policy of the European Union.
