EU-relations: After Romania and the EC began cultivating the interrelations in 1974 Romania tried hard to approach the EU after the end of the dictatorship. In 1995 a Europe Agreement could be signed, and in 2000 the official accession negotiations began. Due to political, economic and social problems Romania was not able to join the EU in 2004, but had to postpone the accession until 2007. Even if Romania today faces the need of reforms in many fields and it might have much work to do as to fighting corruption and effectively protecting minority rights, Romania has made considerable progress - above all thanks to the European perspective.
