EU-relations: Slovenia became nationally independent in 1991, after it had been a part of Yugoslavia since the end of World War II. The approach to the EU and the acceptance of the acquis communautaire were regarded as a chance to modernize the young nation and were widely approved among the Slovenes. In a referendum that was held in 2003 89.64% voted yes to join the EU. As opposed to this, only 66.08% supported the membership of NATO. The EU membership was not least another attempt to escape the Babylonian conditions in the Balkans. Today Slovenia is a model country: It takes the third place in converting the Law of the European Union into national law and has the fewest number of pending cases concerning violation of EU Law. As one of the richest countries to join the EU in 2004 Slovenia has made it all the way to the Eurozone and was the first country of them all to do so. The economic facts are real: High economic growth and low debts. In the first half of 2008, Slovenia got the presidency of the EU as the first of the countries that joined the EU in 2004. It was the third link of the first “Trio Presidency” in the whole history of the EU.
