What is it ?
Model European Union Granada 2012 (MEU Granada 2012) is a simulation of how the three main bodies of the European Union (the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union) function.
It mainly aims to provide university students aged 18-30 with a thorough knowledge of the decision-making process (ordinary legislative procedure) which is carried out in the EU headquarters.
How does it work ?
Model European Union Granada 2012 represents the way new EU legislation comes to force. The European Commission, played by the organising team, drafts and initiates the new legislation while the European Parliament and the Council of the EU, played by the participants, decide to amend it, adopt it or reject it. This way, participants are assigned roles either as Members of the European Parliament or as Ministers of the Council. In order to facilitate communication between both institutions and to provide the project with a touch of reality, participants will also play the role of journalists.
Who organizes it ?
The project is organised by BETA España, a non-profit national youth association founded in the summer of 2011 and whose primary goal is to bring young people closer to how EU institutions work. BETA España was established under the guidance of BETA e.V, a German-based association which was the first one of its kind to organise the Model European Union (MEU) at the best possible venue : the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
And Why ?
The MEU is being held annually since 2008. The organizers participated themselves in 2010 which inspired them to bring it to Spain this year. « We are bringing the MEU to Spain, because we gained a sturdy understanding of the EU legislative procedure and we believe that this is in-depth knowledge that should be shared with anyone that wants to be affiliated with matters of the European Union ! », so the inceptors of the project.
