La mauvaise nouvelle
The absence of a strong deal

After 13 days of talks, the 193 countries participating in the Copenhagen Conference did not achieve the ‘wanted’ outcome. Despite the fact that for the first time all the big economies sat on the same table in order to take actions for the climate change the conference can be characterized as a disaster since it is a weak, non-binding accord. The last minute Copenhagen Accord was based on the USA proposals and followed by China, India, Brazil and South Africa. On the other side there were Sudan, Nicaragua, Cuba, Venezuela and Bolivia denouncing the US-China plan. Jose Manuel Barroso did not hide his disappointment pointing out that the deal was ‘a better accord than no accord’ and it ‘was clearly below’ the EU’s ambition. The German Chancellor, Angela Merkel also noted that ‘the path toward a new agreement is still a very long one’. The most vitriolic comment though, was made by the Sudanese delegate Lumumba Stanistas Dia-Ping, whose country chairs the G77, saying that the agreement reached is ‘the worst in history’.
